The Last Harvest Crows

A thread,
A purpose,
A path,
And it's down the rabbit hole I go.

If I don't return by the time the last harvest crows
Pick the scarecrows clean,
And the daylight dies soon after it's born,
Then send in the tendrils,
And the ghost-lights,
To pull me from the vines,
The barbs,
And the gloom,
Of the ever present,
Spiraling humor,
That is the melancholy now.

Today's Tendril...

Sunrise intentions that emanate with super clarity (and positivity) become tears in the rain when a murder of crows turns the tranquil blue sky into an undulating mass of cacophonous black static.

Morning Crow

Morning crow,
Don’t perch too long,
On the centennial tree,
For the lumberjacks,
Are coming soon.

And the cawing portents,
Mean nothing,
To the shiny teeth,
Of hardened steel.

When crows go to roost long before sunset,
And the distant sky turns charcoal grey,
Within the hour all will see,
The terrible green,
Of the Sisters Three.

Hello, World

Hello, fish in a bowl.
What do I look like to you?
Hello, ants on some plants.
Do you even know that I'm near?
Hello, big, black crow.
Are you some kind of portent?
Hello, world.
What questions will you inspire today?
And where will the answers be {thought, sought, learned, gleaned, harvested, found}?

A Letter to Elanor

Loveliest Elanor,

The moments we shared at the Autumn Festival were the happiest of my life.

We talked. We ate. We laughed. We danced. You smiled. I melted. Time vanished.

It broke my heart to leave you before we enjoyed the last dance of the evening, but I could not be within sight of you when the Harvest Moon reached the highest point in the sky.

And it is not the sight of you that caused me to disappear, for I could stare into your beauty for a thousand lifetimes.

I left because I am not the man you believe me to be and I could not bear to have you see me as I really am.

If all goes as I have planned, then I will return to you on All Hallows' Eve and we will be together again and always.

If not, then know that I did everything that I could to escape Abbot's Cornfield, but that its magic was stronger than what I—a lowly scarecrow given human form for a day—could break.

And if I never return to you in flesh and blood, then I pray that this letter, and my spirit, find their way to you...as the crow flies.

Eternally yours,

Solan

About

I imagined the crow in my visual composition, "As the Crow Flies," carrying a message to someone.

"A Letter to Elanor" is that message.

Today's Tendril...

The butterfly has no agenda.

The crow only comes when skies are gray.

The seed cannot help but germinate (and penetrate).

The cow is a jacket waiting to happen.

Repine

It was an unusually warm and dry Fall, and the scarecrow in the cornfield was sweating up a storm.

"What I wouldn't give for a little rain, or a cool breeze, or even a cold rolling fog," said the scarecrow in a sad, soft voice.

"My straw is baked and brittle, my colorful patches are cracked and dull, and my hat is covered with stalagmites of crow pooh.

"Rain, oh, rain, why have you forsaken me? WHY???"

A heartbeat later, the clear blue sky turned a deep green-gray, angry anvil clouds appeared out of thin air, and a bellowing twister, as black as coal with tendrils of lightning, touched down...right on top of the scarecrow.

After a few moments of swirling fury, the storm streaked into the horizon, and disappeared.

As tranquil blue reclaimed the sky, a murder of crows surveyed the cornfield for damage.

To their surprise, the only damage that could be seen was a small, bare patch of earth where the scarecrow had been staked.

      The End

Swallowed Me Whole

Somehow, in a way that I can't explain, the night snuck up on me – and swallowed me whole...

I found myself knee-deep in whispering grass
and at the center of a firefly vortex.

Distant drums thumped
   and punched
      and pounded
         a slow,
         steady,
         hypnotic
         rhythm.

A crow cawed.

The Snark clapped.

God smiled.

And the moment rolled on
   and on
     and on,
like an amber marble
      across a frozen lake.

Until finally,
in a way that I still can't explain,
the morning snuck up on me
      – and swallowed me whole...

A Prayer, of Sorts

Lord, give me the strength to be more than an empty vessel – show me how to pilot the soul-ship.

Let me hear the message loud and clear through the chatter, prattle, and background noise of daily life.

Draw me away me from the unwritten tomorrow and lead me to the clouds (and the crows) of the ever present now.

Please keep me from getting stuck knee-deep in scat, by avoiding it in the first place.

And when the scat can’t be avoided, remind me not to tarry, but to wade my way to greener pastures.

Amen

An Afternoon at the Lake

Sitting on a beach chair,
  by a modest lake,
on a seasonably mild summer day,
      writing this…

Clouds slowly spread like vines,
  growing across the powder-blue sky.

Ripples on the water –
  concentric circles of happiness,
emanating from so many points of splashiness.

In the sand, all around me
—surrounding me—
  lines,
    and footprints,
      and dunes in miniature.

Bodies of all shapes,
  and sizes,
    and colors,
      and ages,
        and degrees of swimsuit coverage,
          mill about,
            with unseen purpose,
              like weekend ants.

A circling hawk.
  Speeding sparrows.
A lone crow perched on the longest limb of a dead tree,
      on the opposite shore,
surveys (stoically) the peculiar little wet things
romping about in the dark blue expanse below.

Something hornet-like hovers in place for a few moments,
a few inches above one particular patch of sand,
    then zips away,
      then returns,
        and repeats the cycle
          about a dozen times.

Now and then a cool breeze caresses and cools the sun bathers,
while the water lilies shiver and chuckle in place.

Paperback books pepper the sandscape.
Some are held in laps, like precious little things.
Others hug them like teddy bears,
while Zzz-Zzzs dissolve above their heads.
And there are those lost in the pages of the moment,
wondering what the next turn will bring.

A continuous mix of voices rises and falls,
  constantly stirring the conversation stew.
Bits and pieces of daily lives arrive out context to my ears,
becoming the characters and stories in my mind.

And what must they think of me?
The sunglassed man in a beach chair,
        with paper and pen,
          writing intermittently (though intently),
            with a wry smile.

Today's Tendril...

Cardinals, blue jays, and crows: my winged patches of red, blue, and black among the daybreak shimmer of broccoli-green trees.

A caravan of white-tailed deer slowly and silently trace the brush line.

A Mourning Dove calls.

Tranquility...for a moment; for a breath.
